2023-2024 Louisiana Duck Stamp and Print

The Louisiana Duck Stamp Program includes a contest to select the design of the annual state duck stamp. The featured species for the 2023 contest is a beautiful pair of Bufflehead Ducks resting in a marsh or pond setting. These ducks gained their name based on their large “buffleheads”, which bob abruptly in and out of the water before a full-blown dive to retrieve their meal.

This year’s winner, Buck Spencer is a self-taught wildlife artist from Junction City, Oregon.  He started with pencil then transitioned into painting. Acrylic paint is his preferred medium.

His father worked for Wildlife Services most of his life, inspiring him to start studying and drawing animals at a very young age. His older brother is a Wildlife Biologist and Outdoor Writer, so his family is very passionate about wildlife culture. This in turn inspires and motivates him while completing his wildlife paintings.

He had previously worked in the oil field industry that allowed him the unique opportunity to travel from the frozen prairies of North Dakota to the everglades of Florida observing the diverse wildlife species and habitats along the way.

Aside from painting, Buck enjoys fishing, hunting and wildlife photography.
