The Louisiana Duck Stamp Program includes a contest to select the design of the annual state duck stamp. The featured species for the 2022 contest is a beautiful pair of Fulvous Whistling Ducks resting in a marsh or pond setting. The artist’s facination with these “fulvous” (meaning reddish yellow) ducks, with their almost comical blue-gray bills and feet led her to create a painting that displayed their most striking features along with their erect stance. The habitat depicted is rice field stubble near the water’s edge somewhere in southwest Louisiana. These ducks are free to migrate to Louisiana and surrounding area for breeding from wintering areas in Mexico and further south.
This year’s winner, Elaine Erikson – the first female artist to win the Louisiana Duck Stamp contest – was born and raised on Bayou Teche in Iberia parish. She shares a strong family tradition of hunting and fishing on 54 acres of wetlands her family owns in St. Martin Parish. With a very realistic style, her paintings reveal extensive detail. While Elaine’s favorite medium is acrylic, she also paints in oils, watercolor, colored pencils and pastels. In addition to belonging to several area art guilds, her paintings have been shown in various art shows in the New Orleans/Baton Rouge area.
