Founded in 1985 by Barbara and Nelson Landry,
Barnel’s – The Art & Framing Gallery has grown to become one of Acadiana’s largest custom picture framing shops.
In addition to custom picture framing, Barnel’s sells fine art originals and prints, custom window treatments, and an increasing selection of home accessories and gifts.
Barbara began her career as a math and home economics teacher. At heart, she was an artist who enjoyed painting and experimenting with different mediums and surfaces.
Along with her husband Nelson, Barbara opened Barnel’s in 1985 as a place to sell her art. Later, born out of a need for custom picture frame solutions to use with her artwork, Barbara decided to frame her own. In 1989, the focus of Barnel’s expanded from selling Barbara’s art to creating custom picture frames for clients.
Alethea Barras began her career at Barnel’s in September 1992 part-time while working her way through college. After completing her studies in 1995, she joined Barnel’s fulltime.
Alethea is the only Certified Picture Framer (CPF) in the Acadiana area, a designation that is granted only to those who meet extensive qualifications. The most rigorous of which includes the successful completion of a 3 1/2 hour examination administered by Professional Picture Framers Association (PPFA), an organization created to raise the standards of the framing profession, improve education within the industry, and recognize those framers who demonstrate acceptable knowledge and skills of established criteria.
To maintain her certification, Alethea takes continuing education classes, which serve to further hone her skills and keep her on top of the latest custom picture framing trends and technologies.
PPFA initiated the CPF program in 1986 to raise the standards of the framing profession, improve education within the industry, and recognize those framers who demonstrate acceptable knowledge and skills of established criteria.
